Wisconsin Stepmother Faces Up to 46 Years in Prison After Autistic Teen Found Weighing Only 35 Pounds

A disturbing child neglect case out of Wisconsin has sparked widespread outrage after a stepmother entered a plea following the discovery of her severely malnourished 14-year-old stepdaughter, who was found weighing just 35 pounds inside the family’s trailer home.

How the Case Came to Light

The case began on August 21, 2025, when the girl’s father, Walter Goodman, called 911 and requested a welfare check on his daughter. He told dispatchers she had not eaten in several days, had been vomiting for nearly a week, and was drifting in and out of consciousness.

When officers arrived at the trailer home in Oneida, Wisconsin, they found the teenage girl in a critical state. Her ribs, collarbones, hips, and cheekbones were all visibly protruding, and responding officers noted she appeared to be the size of a child half her age. She was immediately rushed to the hospital.

The Extent of Her Medical Condition

Doctors at the hospital discovered the teen was suffering from an alarming number of serious conditions all at once, including acute respiratory failure, cardiac dysfunction, hepatitis, pancreatitis, hypothermia, hypoglycemia, and untreated diabetes. She was so physically weak that she had reportedly been using walls and door handles just to support herself when walking to the bathroom.

Hospital staff also noted that the girl appeared to have very little knowledge of basic personal hygiene, telling them she bathed only occasionally — sometimes as infrequently as once a month.

Disturbing Evidence Found During Investigation

Investigators charged both Walter Goodman and his wife Melissa Goodman with chronic child neglect and false imprisonment roughly two months after the initial 911 call.

A search of Melissa’s phone uncovered deeply troubling evidence. Police found photos showing the teenage girl lying on a bare floor wearing only underwear and socks — a situation that allegedly came about after Melissa threatened to take away her bed. Text messages on the phone also reportedly showed Melissa encouraging others to physically discipline the girl, including one message where she allegedly told someone to strike the teen again after learning she had already been hit with a belt.

Investigators also found a bolt lock with unusually long screws inside the trailer. The screws were found to match holes on the outside of the victim’s bedroom door, strongly suggesting she had been regularly locked inside her room.

The girl later told authorities she believed it had been somewhere between two and four years since she had last been allowed to go outside and play. Family members outside the household had reportedly been told the girl was either visiting relatives or away on vacation, which investigators believe was used to cover up the prolonged abuse and isolation.

Plea Entered and Sentencing Ahead

On May 6, Melissa Goodman entered a no-contest plea to three charges: chronic child neglect causing great bodily harm, chronic child neglect causing emotional damage, and false imprisonment. She is scheduled to be sentenced on July 1, where she could face a maximum combined sentence of up to 46 years in prison.

Melissa is the first of four defendants in the case to enter a plea. Charges remain pending against Walter Goodman, Melissa’s daughter Savanna LeFever, and Savanna’s partner Kayla Stemler.

Walter had previously told investigators that his daughter frequently refused food and had allegedly been mistreated while living with her biological mother before moving in with him. Prosecutors, however, argued that the state of the home and the girl’s condition were consistent with years of deliberate neglect and confinement.

Public Reacts With Outrage

Once details of the case spread online, the reaction from the public was one of shock and fury. Many people expressed disbelief that a child could have been hidden away in such horrific conditions for so long without intervention from anyone outside the home.

“These people are absolutely disgusting, in every way,” one person wrote online.

Others focused on what they described as a failure by the system and the adults around the child to protect her, with many questioning how years of isolation and abuse went undetected for so long.

The case remains ongoing as the remaining defendants await their court dates.
