Nearly three decades after a California college student vanished without a trace, the Kristin Smart case has taken a significant new turn. Investigators searching a property connected to the convicted killer have uncovered soil test results suggesting human remains may be — or may once have been — present at the location, reigniting hopes that her family might finally receive the closure they have waited so long for.
Who Was Kristin Smart?

Kristin Smart was a 19-year-old freshman at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo when she disappeared over Memorial Day weekend in 1996. She was last seen in the early hours of May 25, walking back toward her dormitory after attending an off-campus party. Fellow student Paul Flores was seen accompanying her home that night. She never arrived.
Despite a decades-long investigation that captivated the public and kept her family in a state of painful uncertainty, Kristin’s body was never found. She was legally declared dead in 2002. It was not until 2022 that a jury finally convicted Paul Flores of first-degree murder in connection with her death. Prosecutors argued that Flores had attempted to rape Kristin and killed her that night. His father, Ruben Flores, had been accused of helping conceal her body, though he was ultimately found not guilty of being an accessory.
A New Search Yields Promising but Incomplete Results

The latest development came in early May 2026, when investigators executed a new search warrant at the Arroyo Grande home of Susan Flores, Paul’s mother. The warrant was obtained based on newly developed investigative leads and evidence that met the legal standard required to authorize another search of the property.
Authorities deployed ground-penetrating radar technology and conducted detailed soil analysis during the search. San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson announced at a press conference on May 8 that the soil tests had returned positive results consistent with the compounds produced by a decomposing human body. He was careful to note that while the tests strongly suggested human remains were or had been present at the site, investigators had not yet physically recovered Kristin.

The sheriff explained that advances in both ground-penetrating radar and forensic soil science over the past three decades made this search far more thorough than previous ones. He also noted that investigators believed Kristin’s remains had been moved at some point after originally being buried at Ruben Flores’ property — a theory supported by prior evidence found beneath a deck at that location during a 2021 search, where soil samples had tested positive for human blood.

Search Concluded Without Recovery
On May 9, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office announced that the search at Susan Flores’ property had been concluded. Kristin’s remains were not found. Any evidence collected during the search was sent for further laboratory evaluation to assist the ongoing investigation.
Sheriff Parkinson remained resolute, stating the department is fully committed to locating Kristin and bringing her home to her family. He made clear the investigation is far from over, saying the team plans to continue pursuing every available lead.
Kristin’s Family Continues to Wait

For Kristin’s parents, Stan and Denise Smart, the search brought both renewed hope and continued heartbreak. The couple has spent nearly 30 years fighting for answers and has consistently expressed their belief that justice has not been fully served until their daughter is found and given a proper burial.
In a past interview, Denise Smart had said they were confident a resolution would eventually come, and that Paul Flores would one day regret not coming forward sooner. Stan Smart echoed that sentiment, saying the best possible outcome for the family would always be finding Kristin’s remains and bringing her home.
