Let us start our discussion on the physics revolutions and how they illuminated the universe’s secrets.

The Physics Revolutions that Revamped the World

If we divide the different ages of physics, we will find out the two main distinctions. The first one is the old era of classical physics, also called Newtonian physics.

And the second one is the modern era of quantum physics that was introduced by Einstein and Max Planck’s theories.

Back in the days of classical physics, everyone thought that physics was complete and there was nothing left more to discover.

But then the problem of the wave-particle duality of light came into question. The other problem of blackbody radiation was not explained by classical physics but was later experimentally proved by Devisson and Germer.

That is why quantum physics was introduced by famous scientists like the one that we mentioned earlier. The whole field of physics was rechecked and requested.

Let’s start the discussion of the different phases and ages of the physics revolutions, starting from the beginning until the modern era of technology.

1. The Copernican Revolution (16th Century)

Earlier, before the 16th century, there was a belief that our Earth was at the center of the universe and that everything revolved around the Earth.

But then, in the 16th century, a Polish polymath and astronomist, Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543), formulated that the Sun is in the center of the universe rather than the Earth.

He was not quite accurate, yet he opened the doorway to thinking that old theories and beliefs could be wrong. And now it is proven.

His heliocentric theory of the solar system first proposed that planets revolve around the sun rather than the Earth. He is thus called the Father of Modern Astronomy.

Galileo Galilei started the field of Classical Mechanics by inventing a refracting telescope and observing other planets.

His discoveries transformed the scientific community and made Copernican theories stronger. Thus, he is called the Father of Classical Mechanics.

2: The Newtonian Revolution (17th Century)

Talking about the physics revolutions, we should discuss the time when physics was born. Back in the 17th century, Isaac Newton (1643–1727) made groundbreaking discoveries about the universe.

He is thus called the Father of Modern Physics. He discovered gravity and how it works. Based on that, he proposed the reasons why Earth and other planets revolve around the Sun.

3: The Quantum Revolution (Early 20th Century)

There was a time in history when physics was thought to be complete. There was nothing more to discover and research, and everyone thought that they had completed the field of physics.

Then two people named Max Planck (1858–1947) and Albert Einstein (1879–1955) proposed something that revamped the field of physics. They laid the foundation for the quantum of Quantum Mechanics that we now know as quantum physics.

Quantum mechanics introduced the probabilistic approach. It opposed classical physics, which holds that every piece of information is accurate. It gave the answers to wave-particle duality and blackbody radiation that were not explained by classical mechanics.

This was one of the physics revolutions that revolutionized our understanding of matter and the behavior of atomic and subatomic particles.

Quantum mechanics not only affected the field of physics, but it also revolutionized many fields such as chemistry, material science, and electronics.

These were the three main physics revolutions that transformed the entire world into the modern world. The phases were classical mechanics and quantum mechanics.

The earlier was thought to be complete, but the latter proved everything wrong and gave us a newer perspective on making our research.
