Katie Holmes’ Barely-There “Naked” Manicure Is the Chic Winter Trend Everyone’s Copying

When it comes to your manicure, capturing a nice-looking “nothing” design can be just as much an art form as designing a funky, nail art-forward style. Katie Holmes, minimalist queen, knows this better than anyone else.

On January 12, the 46-year-old was spotted out and about in New York City wearing the perfect nude nail. And no, I don’t mean a sheer coat of bubble bath nude; this manicure actually featured a whole lot of nothing—in the very best way.

With her nails nicely filed into a short, square shape that complimented their natural growth pattern, Holmes… actually, cut me off. That’s all there was to this look! The actress chose to forgo polish—a simple clear coat included—in favor of some good old fashioned buffing.

Thanks to her regular paparazzi-captured Starbucks runs (rumor has it that her order is a half-caf soy latte) we know that she’s been rocking nothing nails for quite some time. The focus on plain fingers is likely due to her role in the Broadway revival of Our Town, which runs through next week. Her character, Mrs. Webb, was definitely not slapping on the Cajun Shrimp polish or sitting for a gel mani during the play’s 1901 to 1913 timeline.

Which isn’t to say that Holmes isn’t always a good person to turn to for a timeless look. When she does rock polish, she takes it easy. Her color choice last November was a soft beige, and before that she chose a sheer caramel and greige hue.

The focus on simplicity extends to her long, dark hair, which she’s mostly been wearing down. Oftentimes, she accessorizes with a beanie or a sweet side braid; this time it was a black knit cap that completed the look. As far as winter makeup went, a swipe of lip gloss did the heavy lifting.

In the end, it’s a lesson in star power. When you’re this casually cool, why bother with the UV lamp?
